New Springs and Camber Plates

Postby Mysphit on Sat Jan 16, 2010 9:31 pm

So I told myself I would be productive over the Christmas break.....so I started the install of the TSW linear springs and the IE camber plates. Got as far as finishing the rear end. Couple items of note. Looks like the same size cold wound steel. However, the springs are shorter than the HR progressives that I am replacing.........but, with weight, Mysphit sits just a tad higher than with the progressives (wasn't expecting that). I also tightened up the rear sway bar all the way and rolled the metal lip inside the rear wheel wells out.....went out to try the new rear springs....turning in to the subdivision managed a 180......"DOH".....yeah......I'm gonna like this set up...... :D

Sooooooooooooo, I got the front springs and camber plates on. Couple notes.......

Mysphits now rides more like the RX8 did. He is standing about a half an inch taller, even with the shorter springs. Just goes to show how much initial give the progressive springs had vs these. With the rolled out wheel lips and the taller stance I bet I could clear the 225's with no issues now....need to find one C7. I have mounted the star specs to beat on for a while first, then we'll switch back to the R's. In theory (won't know for sure till I hit up GTE again) the camber plates add -1.25 to whatever I could pull off with stock OEM settings, so I am, in theory, running -2.25 now up front. Way more noticeable turn in reaction now AND, I know it's strange, but the car rides quieter now.......hmmmmmm. Almost drifted the entrance to an exit cloverleaf at god knows what speed this morning...rear just wants to come around at lift now...rotating really well now... ...may need to back off the rear sway bar one notch till I get used to this setup (again)......but DAMN, it sure is fun as hell to drive......

Something else I just noticed. I have always (with both MINI's) had an issue with the inner half inch or so of tread block on the front tires not showing any general rolling contact. Now, I have complete tread block contact.....the entire width of the tread patch.......matches the back now......without a trip to GTE (in Atlanta) I have 0.5 degrees from center (+ or -) I can bring back with the hole adjustments in the top of the strut tower. So I can play a little with it....so, in theory I can come back from -2.25 to -1.75 on center or even -1.25 all the way the other direction .....the back is set at -1.8.
